Akufo-Addo marches Ghana to the IMF.

As a result of the economic difficulties that have caused the Ghanaians to endure intolerable suffering, the government of Ghana is in talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to ask for assistance.

Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah of the Ministry of Information said in a news statement that President Akufo-Addo has already notified the IMF of his intentions to request assistance.

“Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic, has given Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta permission to begin official contacts with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and invite the Fund to endorse an economic program developed by the Government of Ghana.

Parts of the news statement from the Ministry of Information stated, “This follows a telephone discussion between the President and the IMF Managing Director, Miss Kristalina Georgieva, communicating Ghana’s determination to cooperate with the Fund.”

The statement continues, “At a meeting on June 30, 2022, cabinet expressed approval for the choice. As part of a larger attempt to hasten Ghana’s recovery from the obstacles brought on by the Covid-19 epidemic and, more recently, the Russia-Ukraine conflicts, the engagement with the IMF will strive to offer balance of payment assistance.

Calls for the administration to take into account joining an IMF program during the current period of the ongoing economic issues have increased during the last week.

The administration has now chosen to turn to the IMF for assistance, while previously emphasizing that it was utilizing domestic measures to address the problems.
