Asamoah Gyan won’t be selected by a capable World Cup coach – Charles Taylor

Charles Taylor, a former player for Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, claims that despite Asamoah Gyan’s desire to play in the World Cup, any good coach will ignore him right now.

Prior to the 2022 World Cup, which will be held in Qatar, Gyan said in an interview with the BBC last week that he is aiming to rejoin the Black Stars team.

Since his remarks, a number of fans, ex-teammates, and football administrators have voiced their concerns, with Taylor being the most recent.

The former Ghanaian international claims that no result-driven coach will contemplate selecting Gyan for the World Cup.

“We have regular fitness and match fitness. Even those who get injured and return struggle to hit the ground running,” Taylor said on Angel FM.

“We are not talking about history; we’re looking at current performance. He has done his bit for the country.

“A fit and firing Gyan will have a free ride to the World Cup but let’s ask what he is training for. I don’t think any competent coach will entertain this. We can’t take someone who is not playing for any club.”

Gyan, 36, has 51 goals to his name for the Black Stars, six of which came at the World Cup.
