IMF will assist Ghana in overcoming macroeconomic difficulties – US Ambassador to Ghana

Virginia Palmer, the US ambassador to Ghana, is optimistic that the IMF would be able to assist Ghana in resolving its macroeconomic problems.

The high level of debt and excessive government expenditure, which, according to the diplomat, are made worse by the Covid-19 outbreak and the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, are to blame for Ghana’s economic difficulties.

She continued by saying that the US wanted to help the nation’s economy revive.

The ambassador expressed her satisfaction that Ghana was making an effort to solve its problems while responding to inquiries from the media during a meeting with the media in Tamale as part of a working tour to the Northern Region.

“Ghana has macroeconomic difficulties, including excessive government expenditure and debt levels, which have been made worse by COVID-19 and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. I hope they can handle the issue with the IMF program,” she remarked.

Regarding the security issues facing Ghana, she applauded the government for launching the “see something, say something” security campaign to raise awareness among Ghanaians of the danger posed by terrorism to regional security.

The US Embassy, according to Mrs. Palmer, has a friendly working relationship with the security agency and provides logistical support as well as capacity development to assist in handling the security threat.

She said that Ghana’s democracy is her most important quality and that it cannot be underlined enough that the US government is worried about the dire situation in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Guinea.

Ambassador Virginia said, “We are worried about democratic backsliding in Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea, and Ghana example, is really essential to that.

She praised the administration for realizing the need of inclusive economic growth in the north for Ghana’s economic development, for maintaining peace and stability, and for thwarting violent extremism.

The US government will continue to provide assistance in the areas of health, agriculture, and security, according to Ambassador Virginia Palmer.
