Leaders in Suame Magazine have expressed regret for the assault on Suame’s Member of Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, which occurred on Monday during a demonstration against the incomplete Suame-Maakro road.

The MP was jeered at and pelted with various objects during the event, and the authorities at the auto parts enclave have also distanced themselves from it.

“There is a rumor going around town that we the leaders of Suame Magazine were behind the attack on the honorable MP, and what we are saying is that we are not behind the attack and there was no meeting or any planned thing to do something of that sort,” said Anthony Oppong, the Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Union of Traders, in a statement to Eyewitness News.

After the apologies, Mr. Oppong said his accomplices intended to personally apologize to the MP.

“We’ve contacted the MCE of Suame to set up a meeting where we will have the chance to personally apologize to him,” the statement reads.

According to Mr. Oppong, the uncertainty on that particular day was a “issue of communication” over the condition of the incomplete road, which led to the protest.

The regional highway director had previously been introduced to him, and he was aware of the resource limitations that had caused the project’s delay.

He assured me completely that they would return to the road on Monday, the day the event occurred, since a shortage of bitumen was holding up the project.
