Lydia Forson feels bad for the 21-year-old criminal sentenced to 7 years in prison for stealing just an astroturf.
A poor man was sentenced to 7 years in jail for stealing and using synthetic green material intended for an astroturf as carpet in his room, according to Lydia Forson, a social critic and actress from Ghana.
Gideon Asuako, a 21-year-old inhabitant of Dwenem, a town in the Berekum Municipality in the Bono region, was accused of stealing synthetic grass used to build an astroturf field in the same municipality.
After that, the police quickly apprehended him and brought him before His Lordship Osei Kofi Amoako’s Berekum Circuit Court, where he was charged with trespassing, criminal damage, and theft.
He entered a plea of guilty to these counts, and the judge gave him a seven-year jail term with hard labor.
“UPDATE: Gideon Asuako, 21, was sentenced to seven years in prison for stealing pieces of the artificial pitch at Drobo Faaman to use as a carpet in his room.
“He has just been transported there to begin serving his sentence, according to a jail officer acquaintance at Sunyani, the sports writer Saddick Adams tweeted on July 7.
Miss Forson said in response to the tweet seen by Modernghana News that the underprivileged in Ghana are consistently treated harshly by the legal system.
She went on to say that her comments are not meant to justify the crime, but he believes that a sentence of seven years is too severe for someone to receive for a transgression they likely committed due to poverty.
“Our legal system favors the wealthy and discriminates against the poor.
“Although she acknowledges that he should have received a penalty, she bemoans the harshness of losing seven years from a life that already seemed to be filled with hardship.
