Stop translating Asian telenovelas into Twi or Ga; it disgusts me, professor Mike Oquaye.
Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, a former speaker of the Ghanaian legislature, has criticized the dubbing of various foreign telenovelas in the Akan language on Ghanaian TV stations.
According to Prof. Oquaye, he feels unwell.
Speaking at the University of Ghana, Legon, during the Okyenhene Ba D. Jones Akwasi Amoako Atta Ofori-Atta inaugural memorial lecture, the former Dome-Kwabenya MP denounced the practice.
So, in order to promote Ghana’s culture and foster growth, he urged the country’s film industry to create tales about it.
Prof. Oquaye made the plea, “I ask our performers and scriptwriters to come out with Ghanaian films.”
Every time I hear Twi or Ga phrases shoved through some European or Asian lips, I become nauseous, he said.
He said, “If we want to grow as a people, the practice has to be slopped.”
These, in his opinion, “are the elements that unmake a country.”
In Malaysia, that could never occur. In India, that will never occur. He emphasized that it could never occur in any Asian nation.
