‘The next NDC administration will address ex-gratia payment concerns head-on’ – Mahama
Former President John Mahama has reassured Ghanaians that ex-gratia payment issues will be addressed by the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
According to Former President Mahama, the 1992 constitution will be amended to reflect this.
He emphasized the importance of including more Article 71 emoluments-related issues.
Speaking on Sunday, August 28, at a meeting with NDC attorneys, the former president promised that if the NDC is approved in 2024, the constitutional review process that started under the administration of the late President Atta-Mills would continue.
A task, he said, that the Akufo-Addo administration has fallen short of.
“The next NDC government must commit to the implementation of the review of the 1992 Constitution, which was begun by President John Evans Atta Mills of blessed memory.
This review should among others aim at reforming the judiciary and tackle head-on issues on ex-gratia payments and other matters of Article 71 emoluments.”
After being returned by the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, a former member of the Council of State, the payment of ex gratia to former public office holders has recently come under fire.
He elaborated on why it would be improper for him to get GHC300,000 as ex gratia for a part-time work he performed from a nation that is experiencing economic difficulty.
“I returned the ex gratia money not because I did not need money. In fact, at that particular time, I needed money very badly to meet various family obligations.
“But I truly believed that the money was not deserved. It was inappropriate for what I will emphasize again was essentially a part-time work”, he stressed at the maiden edition of the Asogli Anti-Corruption Day Celebration in Ho.
Between 2017 and 2020, Togbe Afede was a member of the Council of State, the president of Ghana’s advisory body.
